Phase 3: The Researched Essay

Cover Letter

Whilst brainstorming for phase 3’s assignment, I’ve grown to develop a greater understanding at how authors incorporate rhetorical appeal within their writing. It was always troublesome to fully comprehend the compositional techniques and strategies that are used by authors, detailing each and every moment of their recollection of a personal experience. Not only but aiming to reveal the underlying purpose behind these appeals became very difficult to point out. However, with the conclusion of the third phase of this English Composition class, I can safely say that I have successfully grown to understand the general application of persuasion within many pieces of writing; much of what has been possible from the different literary features that are exposed throughout their entirety. By generalizing the underlying purpose behind certain narratives written, I was able to tailor my comprehension of the arguments expressed in order to appropriately convey an overall awareness behind the topic in the real world. With this, I was able to successfully portray the aspect that, while the general public tends to feel that the world remains oblivious from the comprehension of cultural discrimination, recent publications of personal experiences prove that the acculturation of English standards continue to linger throughout society. This comes to portray the overall idea of cultural discrimination that has grown apparent throughout many written narratives within modern society.

Evidently enough, the audience that was targeted while researching for this topic was towards people who shared common struggles with being culturally discriminated. With this, many different journalists and known scholars have come to inform others of the many effects behind those that are targeted for how they speak and act within society, partially based off of the fact that they aren’t able to live up to the American standards. With coming to write about the apparent rise in discrimination within the real world, many scholars build their own credibility through the portrayal of variations found within modern society. With this, the comprehension of such ideas set forth is shown through the context that cultural discrimination has borne a negative impact upon the livelihoods of the average foreign individual.

Other than cross examining the different perspectives proposed through different sources, I have also come to acquire many other meaningful insights within this phase, in regard to language and research. Amongst the multitude of different concepts and terms introduced within this assignment period, I’ve found myself resonating with recognizing the role of language attitudes and standards in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, as the entirety of the topic that I had chosen had dealt with this ideology. By the conclusion of writing this research essay, it was highly evident that individuals within society have varying opinions on how they view the normalcy of language skills to be like. Thus, there holds no doubt to the idea that the establishment of hierarchies within society has unfortunately risen into vast prominence, and in much need of reform through further awareness.

As a result, I believe that my piece of work comes to showcase an effective achievement of “recognizing the role of language attitudes and standards in empowering, oppressing, and hierarchizing languages and their users, and being open to communicating across different languages and cultures”, a Course Learning Outcome that I’ve targeted throughout this phase of the semester. After completing multiple rhetorical precis handouts on pieces written by renowned authors such as Rosina Green and Matthew S. McGlone / Barbara Breckinridge, I’ve come to understand how despite the idea that cultural discrimination does not define society as a role, there is a greater consensus to the fact that such cultural appropriation continues to negatively burden the functionality of a society in many ways.
